Colloid-E (1988-92)

Ensemble - 8 '

colloid-E is the second of the five movement work negatives (1988-93) for nine players written for the Australian ensemble ELISION. Colloid literally means "a mixture having particles of one component suspended in a continuous phase of another component; the mixture has properties between those of a solution and a suspension", the E-suffix denoting the ensemble version of a piece which can also be performed as a solo. The fluid, cascading material of the 10 stringed guitar passes through various levels of suspension and precipitation in relation to the surrounding ensemble material. Richard Toop described this movement as "a sort of viscous, part-granular fluid, scanned at highest possible magnification, as if through an acoustic microscope".

colloid-E is dedicated to Magnus Andersson.
