Black. Starlight. Bright. Cinnamon. Earth (2000) |
For ensemble - c.12'
The colourful title is simply a collection of words which I assembled to describe the music as it neared completion. It is a work full of contrasts, from the ‘black' opening sentences where bassoon and cello push against a background of low strings and heavy tuba notes, past glittering repeated chords of high woodwind and piano, through a section where the tuba sets up a dancing pulse before drums hammer the music into the Earth, and then onwards and upwards into a bright final section. Above all, the work is a celebration of the energy and musicianship of the young players for whom it was written.
