Come Holy Ghost is a setting of the ancient pentecost Hymn “Veni Creator Spiritus” in which the Holy Spirit is invoked in order to inspire our souls and impart the sevenfold gifts of the spirit. The organ takes the part of the Holy Ghost, cutting a dramatic swathe through the choral music as it rises from the lowest notes to glittering motifs at the top.
The work was commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival, and received its first performance in August 1993 under Donald Hunt.
