Concertante (1985)

For strings (6.0.2.2.1) or string orchestra

Concertante was commissioned by the BBC for the Guildhall String Ensemble. It consists of two movements, the first of which is energetic and restless. The eleven players are divided into four groups; the leader on his own, a second group consisting of two cellos and a violin, a group of four violins and, lastly, two violas and a double bass. When all the various combinations of these groups have been heard, the music quite simply ends. The second movement starts extremely slowly. It is dark and intense and only takes advantage of the instrumental groupings towards the end and before the appearance, finally, of a chorale-like tune.
