Heron (1988)

cello, piano - 14'

Herons regularly fly over our house - a beautiful, wild treat given that we live in a noisy part of London. One day I found something in the bird's steady, graceful flight that echoed the lines of the cello melody that I was chiselling away at, and so this work acquired it's title. Heron is one continuous stretch of musical material. Within this the cello falls into two paragraphs - two large blocks of melody, each of which is repeated as soon as it is heard. There is a coda which ends very peacefully, taking the cello higher and higher, and quieter and quieter...... away over the distant horizon. This work is dedicated to my mother Audrey.
