Lament (1988) |
bassoon or clarinet, percussion - 5'
Lament occurs between the two acts of Diana Burrell's 'The Albatross', which is based on a short story of the same name by Susan Hill. The story is a portrayal of Duncan Pike, a retarded 18 year-old. 'Lament' is performed at a particuarly poignant moment in the opera, and might be seen as the musical realisationof Duncan's inner turmoil. The piece ends calmly, though perhaps not so much in a peaceful mood as in a mental and emotional abyss.
