Trois Noëls (2001) |
1. Ding Dong!
Merrily on High
2. O Tannenbaum (with optional violin solo ad lib.)
3. Noël
The melody of Ding Dong! Merrily on High is based on the Branle de l'Official by Thoinot Arbeau (1588), with a text by George Ratcliffe Woodward (1845-1934). O Tannenbaum uses a traditional carol from Alsace, with an optional violin counterpoint ad libitum in the final verse. The last piece, Noël, develops a traditional yodel also from Alsace (Colmar), Uff em Berjel bin ich g'sässe, with a text by Naji Hakim. These carols were originally intended to introduce the composer's Sonata for violin and piano which develops the same themes
