Commissioned by Jane Chapman and Kate Ryder for the BMIC’s Cutting Edge Series Tour, 2006-07. First performance: 26 October, 2006, London: BMIC Cutting Edge Series, The Warehouse. Jane Chapman, harpsichord, Katey Ryder, prepared piano. One Imperial Thunderbolt was inspired by a recent trip to my childhood home in St. Petersburg, Florida - the lightning capital of the world. In one particularly violent evening the Tampa Bay Weather Center recorded 10,000 lightning strikes in a two hour period. This evening’s event promises to be more modest. The harpsichord and prepared piano twitter around each other in and out of sync like nervous electrons trying to make a spark.
