Vlug (1992)

amplified flute, electronics & tape - 5' 30"

Commissioned by Jos Zwaanenburg with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain. First performance: 24 January, 1992, Jack Lyons Concert Hall, York University. Jos Zwaanenburg, flute, Stephen Montague, electronicsVlug is the Dutch word for 'fast'. For me the musical world has more than enough slow works. Since the early 1970s I have tried in a small way to redress the balance. Undoubtedly part of my interest in fast music developed during my years touring as a pianist. Rare was the occasion when I could find enough lively contemporary works to fill out a concert programme. A similar dearth, it seems, also exists in the modern flute repertoire. Vlug is a short study in velocity inspired by the dazzling virtuosity of the Dutch flutist, Jos Zwaanenburg. The live electronics treat the flute sounds adding some further intensity to the presto moto perpetuo.
