Elegy (1982)

For solo oboe, flute, clarinet, violin, 'cello and percussion - 14'

By a process of careful selection from hundreds of possibilities the multiphonics chosen for 'Elegy' create the melodic and harmonic framework for the music. Separated from the instrumental ensemble the oboe chord's are sometimes enhanced by ring modulation and amplification. Formally, the work contains three main sections: melodic canons from the ensemble; a rhapsodic episode from oboe and percussion; reprise combining all elements. An oboe cadenza leads to the serene coda in homage to the calm and generous nature of Janet Craxton, whose contribution to the music of our times, as well as in the past, will always be remembered with love and gratitude. This work was comissioned and first conducted by David Hellewell in 1982 together with the Arts Council of Great Britain.
