suite for young pianists - c.5'
Les Miroirs de Miró was commissioned by United Music Publishers in 1981 as a suite for young pianists. As I am a keen advocate of relationships between the arts my first notion was to have a reproduction of the painting in each title printed on the opposite page to the music, but this proved too expensive a process. There is an element of pastiche in each piece which is intended as an introduction to traditional as well as progressive characteristics of Spanish music (Ravel was by no means averse to such a notion!). The technical requirements were calculated in relation to Associated Board grades, and one of the pieces has featured regularly in examination lists. As a soloist and examiner who travels the world Sally Mays has included several of my works in her programmes and is an inspiration to her students and to me.
