Partita (1970) |
For solo cello - c. 10'
Ross Pople has been a constant champion, performer and commissioner of my music throughout a long friendship, beginning when we were members of the Menuhin Festival Orchestra in the early seventies. The Partita was commissioned by Ross as a test piece for his performance in the 1972 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. For this reason it embraces a wide range of expressive and technical resources, inspired by the artistry of Ross Pople. It is in four short movements of contrasting character, the title being an affectionate gesture towards the great baroque masters of the form.
