Soliloquy 2 |
for solo viola
The invitation to compose a virtuoso viola work for Dimitri Murath gave me a wonderful opportunity to explore the expressive and technical range of an instrument which has a somewhat smaller repertoire than its violin cousin. While the piece explores a language which may be less familiar in its vocabulary, at the same time it attempts to create a sound world of vivid textures and colours, many of which are new to the instrument. This does not deny an essentially romantic bias in the expressive qualities which I indulge. The intense and imaginative artistry exemplified in Dimitri’s beautiful playing was a powerful inspiration for this challenging work.
