Time consists of a simple pitch spiral and was written immediately after reading Robert Holdstock's novel Earthwind. Its structural and emotional gamuts owe, in major part to that book. The first basset clarinet performance was given by Robert Schuck, the dedicatee, at the British Music Information Centre on 2 February 1981; the first performance on bass clarinet was given by Roger Heaton at the 1984 Darmstadt Summer School.
