Topologies (1979-80) |
solo piano - 11'
Topology: branch of geometry concerned with the factors which remain unchanged when an object undergoes a continuous transformation.
Topologies: an 11 and a half minute work for piano in which intuitive composition is gradually overcome by rigorous systematisation. Through a continual process of gestural definition and deconstruction, one is led on a tour of all kinds of piano writing, from the purely monodic opening to the densest chordal passages, constantly and unpredictably animated by the torrents of notes which give the work its extraordinary verve and excitement.
