Four Frames in a Row (1999) |
Baroque flute, high voice, violin, gamba (or cello) and theorbo – 13‘30
This Cantata for (mainly) baroque instruments was commissioned by the flautist Stephen Preston and his group ‘Mzt’. It was premiered at the University of Nottingham in January 2006.
Texts are taken from a collection of ‘verses’ by the Devon poet, John Hall.
The subject(s) of the songs are varied and often complex. Indeed, the orchestration for this work demands an acoustic that is friendly to an intimate yet complex music. Wherever performances take place, in the event of a significant echo, the metronome markings should be taken as indicative and not mandatory and it is recommended that the music be taken at a slower pace than indicated in the score!
