Cātana (1984) |
ensemble - 16'
Cātana was written in 1984. Like much of Michael Finnissy's output, it alludes to other cultures and their ethnic backgrounds. Here the source is a Rumanian folk melody, not directly quoted but referred to about a quarter of the way through, and the entire fabric of the sound seems to stem from this East European route. The characteristics of folk music from that part of the world are obvious throughout but especially at the beginning where the music of the oboe, violin and tambourine draws the listener into the composer's own distinctive sound world as well as conjuring up images of a village folk band.
