Beuys was commissioned by the Almeida opera for Yvar Mikhashoff who gave the first performance on 11 July 1992. The title pays tribute to the German artist Joseph Beuys whose work has been of particular interest to me over recent years.
The commission was to write a short piano piece of up to 3 minutes duration. The result is a short study which explores, through the development of precise notational stategies, aspects of musical structure which allow for interpretative decisions in their realisation.
