+R (1991)

solo clarinet - 10'

+R was commissioned with funds from Northern Arts by Roger Heaton who gave the first performance in 1990 Es Festival, Milan. In 1994 the work was subsequently revised and extended receiving its first complete performance by Andrew Sparling at the British Music Information Centre.

Initially there are two contrasting materials: the first is defined harmonically by a system of rotating/permutating chords which gradually 'slide' over each other; the second is more linearly defined by a kind of 'virtual' polyphony created by a layering of secondary parametric levels.

Throughout the work these materials gradually merge in such a way that the defining structures of each develop and transform those of its opposite, creating a new network of sub-structures and materials.
