String Quartet (1972)

string quartet - 11'

My String Quartet was written in 1972 in response to a commission for the South Bank Summer Music Festival and was performed that year by the Yale Quartet, at the Purcell Room, London. The music is continuous, dividing into seven distinct sections, each one exploring different instrumental timbres and harmonic densities. It is primarily textual music (which was very much a preoccupation of mine during the early seventies), relying on the careful juxtapositioning of contrasting colours to create and generate its overall form. The Quartet is dedicated to André Previn, who commissioned the piece.
