Three Pieces for Chamber Ensembles (1970-82)

This work comprises three self-contained titled instrumental compositions, composed separately over a period of eleven years. Spirogyra (1971) and Flugel (1973) were both written during my studies with John Lambert at the RCM and Gunther Schuller in Tanglewood. The third composition of the set, Path to Othona (1982) was written for a BBC College Concert and was first performed alongside the other two pieces by Oliver Knussen and the London Sinfonietta. Each of the pieces requires a different instrumental ensemble and Path to Othona involves the addition of a four-channel sound system projecting multi-layered alto flute music. I feel that these pieces represent important changes and developments in my music from 1972-1982.
