Voicing (1982)

wind quintet, piano, string quintet - 11'

In Voicing I attempted to merge wind, piano and string instruments into one rich homogeneous sound world, where no one solo instrument predominates. The music is generated through a basic pulse of crotchet equals 132; about halfway through the piece this tempo moderates into a slower tempo of crotchet equals 88 which in turn is modulated into dotted crotchet equals 88, creating a continuous and relentless mechanism which lasts the whole duration of the piece. Looking at the work as a whole, one can hear a gradual increase of energy and force, which finally explodes into frenetic "horizontal" instrumental writing and brings the piece to a close.

Voicing was commissioned by the Nash Ensemble, with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain, and is dedicated to Amelia Freedman and the Nash Ensemble.
